UAP CE SEMINAR SERIES by Sheikh Muhammad Ferdous
On Thursday (28 December 2017) evening, a seminar on "Challenges in Deep Excavation" was held at Civil Engineering Department as part of UAP CE SEMINAR SERIES.
Sheikh Muhammad Ferdous, Chartered Professional Civil Engineer (CEng), was the guest speaker.
A practical experience of design development processes for a 26.5 m deep basement excavation of a prestigious 16-storey mixed-use hospital development in Singapore was highlighted in the presentation. The retention system of this excavation was secant bored pile wall and sequences of construction were semi top-down. Design development was based on Eurocodes, CIRIA guidelines and Advisory notes of Building and Construction Authority in Singapore. The finite element analyses in PLAXIS 2D were developed for this problem. A systematic approach to these design development processes was also highlighted. Workplace health and safety in the design development process and damage assessment of a neighboring existing hospital building were included in the design. Hence, stability, sensitivity and damage assessment analyses were presented.Practical experience of managing ground instrumentation was also discussed.
The hour-long seminar ended in a Q&A session. Several faculties of Civil Engineering Department attended the seminar.
