Research and Publication

The Department of Pharmacy has a flourishing effort in three major fields of basic research since its establishment in 1996. These are:

  •  Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology
  •  Phytochemistry and Phytotherapy
  •  Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biotechnology

The pharmaceutics research group (comprising of Prof. Dr. Reza-ul Jalil, S.M. Ashraful Islam, Ms. Parvin Akter, Ms. Masuda Khatun, Ms. Irin Dewan, Mr. Md. Ziaur Rahman Khan, Mr. Mesbahuddin Talukder and Mr. Md. Saiful Islam) is continuing its research endeavor in the field of drug delivery. To explore the mechanistic approach to release kinetics and to design and evaluate drug delivery systems is the major focus of this group. Dr. Md. Selim Reza, Mr. Mohiuddin Ahmed Bhuiyan, Mirza Mohammad Ali Reza, Jakir Ahmed Chowdhury and Mohiuddin Abdul Quadir contributed a lot in this research group from starting of the department. The phytochemistry and phytotherapy research group (comprising of Mr. Mohammad Kaisarul Islam) aims to apply scientific principles and analytical techniques for identifying, characterising and quantifying biomolecules from natural sources. Phytotherapy specifically looks at medicinal plants that are used as well-defined extracts for specific illnesses and therefore, entails with biological testing of plant extracts, isolation of their active components and toxicological studies in order to discover new leads for future drug development. Department also thanks Mr. M.A. Mazid, K.M. Rahman and R. Chowdhury for their previous research participation.

In the year 2005-2006 a research project entitled “Antibacterial principles from medicinal plants of Bangladesh” was granted for generous financial support under the capacity utilization program of Ministry of Science and Information & Communication Technology (MOSICT), Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh. The project was directed by Dr. Mahboob Hossain as the principal director. Mr. R. Chowdhury and Mr. MMA Reza, Dept. of Pharmacy, UAP also worked as associate directors.
An initiative was taken for the development of collaboration between the Department of chemistry, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and Dept. of Pharmacy, UAP through Mr. R. Chowdhury, Dept. of Pharmacy, UAP in order to carry out bioassays over synthetic heterocyclic compounds.
