On Saturday (10 November 2018) morning, a seminar on "Water and Flood Management Perspectives in Bangladesh" was held at Civil Engineering Department as part of UAP CE SEMINAR SERIES.

Prof. Dr. M. Monowar Hossain, Executive Director, Institute of Water Modeling (IWM), was the guest speaker. He was former Dean of Faculty of Civil Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

On the first session, he depicted the existing challenges of the water and flood management in a developing country like Bangladesh which has a very high population density (approx. 1100 people per sq. km.). He discussed about the losses of lives and property due to different natural calamities such as – floods, droughts, cyclones, river erosion etc. Besides this, he also gave an overview about the effect of climate change on land and water management and on storm surge and improvement of coastal polders. He ended the session by discussing about the BDP (Bangladesh Delta Plan) 2100.

On the second session, the honorable speaker discussed about the impact of climate change on floods; construction of climate resilient coastal polders or embankments; economic losses resulting from the major floods; flood mitigation measures and effect of vortex on river bank.

The 3 hours long seminar ended in a Q&A session. Several faculties from Department of Civil Engineering also attended the seminar along with the students.
