UAP CE SEMINAR by Mr. Sohel Rana


On Wednesday (19 June 2019), a seminar on "ADDRESSING URBAN INFORMALITY-CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS" was held at Room no: 614 of the Department of Civil Engineering of University of Asia Pacific. Mr. Sohel Rana, Urban Planning and Design Officer of UN-Habitat, Kenya, was the guest speaker.

In the first half of the seminar, he delineated some of the key urbanization challenges of 20th century e.g informal settlement, low-density urban growth, lack of social mix, lack of services and infrastructure, followed by the 17 sustainable development goals. He also depicted how the slums of Dhaka city have been developed as the result of the failure of urban planning, land management, and urban development policies.

In the second half, he provided with some important career tips for Civil Engineering students to build their career in different United Nations organizations such as UNICEF, UNHCR, UNDP, UNOPS, IOM, UNITAR. The hour-long seminar ended in a Q&A session. Dr. Farzana Rahman, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering of University of Asia Pacific, attended the seminar with other faculties.
